Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is the most well-known type of massage.  Massage therapists apply pressure using the hands, forearms, or elbows in order to release muscle tension, making sure to rub in the same direction as the flow of blood to the heart.  The purpose of a Swedish massage is to release toxins from the muscles while increasing the flow of oxygen within the blood stream.  If you have suffered from any form of muscular injury, massage is helpful in decreasing your recovery time by flushing out excess muscular waste.  This can include lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic waste, which causes pain and cramping in the muscles.  Overall, Swedish massage is ideal for an individual with minor injuries or anyone simply wishing to reduce stress.  Massage is extremely helpful in reducing emotional and physical stress as well as muscles tension while increasing blood circulation and range of motion.

Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a technique in which deep finger pressure and slow strokes are used to reach the deep muscles and connective tissues of the body, releasing tension and improving blood circulation.  As opposed to other forms of massage, deep tissue massage breaks up and releases scar tissue buildup that, without being treated, causes pain, inflammation and decreased range of motion. This is very beneficial to individuals suffering from chronic muscle pain.  Discomfort is not uncommon during a deep tissue massage and it is important to alert the therapist should you experience pain outside of our comfort level.  Individuals can be fairly sore after a deep tissue massage, but any soreness from the massage should disappear within a day or two.  If you have chronic tension in your neck, shoulders, lower back or another area, deep tissue massage may be the solution for you.

Sports Therapy Massage
Sports massages may be given to athletes before during, or after an athletic event.  Swedish massage techniques are used, in addition to deep tissue massage methods.  Prior to a sporting event, massage may loosen the muscles and relive tension to prepare the athlete for their best performance while preventing injury.  During physical activity, the body tends to tighten up and produces stress and tension in the muscles.  A massage following an event helps to alleviate stress, promote flexibility, release acid within the muscles, and decrease the amount of swelling and inflammation.  If any form in injury occurred during an event, massage assists in lessening the severity of the damage.  Many individuals will find sports massages to be beneficial, from the once-a-week jogger to the collegiate football player!  Because each athlete is different and uses different parts o their body in different ways, the therapist will discuss techniques best suited for your particular needs.
